GSI India: Unveiling the Truth Behind Counterfeits in the Coloured Gemstone Market
GSI INDIA: UNVEILING THE TRUTH BEHIND COUNTERFEITS IN THE COLOURED GEMSTONE MARKET
26th November 2024
Coloured gemstones have always been in a league of their own when it comes to popularity in the Indian jewellery market, which is otherwise dominated by precious metals. Being an essential element of luxury since time immemorial, they are often purchased individually to be made into jewellery later on. Ramit Kapur, the Managing Director of GSI India shares an exciting new find by the Gemological Science International’s research & development team.
The Trade-Off of Authenticity
The trade-off here is authenticity, and the global grey market, through its dubious jewellery shop counters strategically placed across tourist destinations, is unforgiving in its ways to dupe excited yet ill-informed and unsuspecting gemstone lovers. The following case of an apparently ‘Natural Kashmir Sapphire’ is a wake-up call not only for industry peers but also for the end-consumers.
A Case of Deception: ‘Natural Kashmir Sapphire’
A client approached us with a stunning 12-carat gemstone, purchased overseas as a “Natural Kashmir Sapphire” and accompanied by what appeared to be a credible lab report. The offer was tantalising, with the price set significantly below market value. Gemological analysis at our lab and efforts from our R&D department soon revealed the unsettling truth: the stone was a synthetic sapphire, expertly engineered to mimic the visual and physical characteristics of its natural counterpart. Refractive index (RI) and specific gravity (SG) tests confirmed the synthetic origin, while microscopic examination revealed tell-tale signs of a flame-fusion process, such as gas bubbles and curved striae. The counterfeit lab report added a layer of complexity, meticulously mirroring genuine documentation to deceive the buyer.
The Larger Pattern of Fraud
This case underscores a larger pattern. Fraudsters often target emotionally driven purchases, capitalizing on impulsive decisions made in unfamiliar environments like tourist hubs or during online sales. Such schemes have grown increasingly sophisticated, with counterfeit certifications and high-quality imitations that are difficult to discern without expert intervention.
Synthetics and Imitations: A Growing Challenge
Synthetics, artificial stones, and imitation gems are designed to closely resemble their natural counterparts, making it increasingly difficult for the average consumer to distinguish between genuine and fake. An authentic emerald, for instance, can have a synthetic twin created in a lab to mimic its colour, clarity, and weight, making it nearly impossible to tell apart without the right expertise and equipment.
The Role of Reputable Gemological Laboratories
That’s where reputed and global gemological certification laboratories such as GSI become crucial allies for consumers and retailers alike. Our labs are armed with state-of-the-art, advanced instruments and staffed by trained gemologists, who perform rigorous testing to determine a gemstone’s true identity, origin, and authenticity. By analysing various properties; from a stone’s refractive index to microscopic inclusions that act as “fingerprints,” labs can identify whether a stone is natural, synthetic, treated, or fake. Certified reports from trusted labs not only confirm authenticity but also provide consumers with essential information, giving them the confidence to make informed purchases and avoid potential scams.
Consumer Trust: A Cornerstone of the Gemstone Market
Consumer trust is the cornerstone of the gemstone market. Protecting this trust demands a collaborative effort from the industry, guided by innovation, vigilance, and education.
Steps for Buyers to Ensure Authenticity
- Insist on Verification: Cross-check gemstone certifications with reputable laboratories that provide robust verification tools.
- Rely on Trusted Sources: Make purchases from established jewelers with proven integrity and a commitment to transparency.
- Stay Educated: Understand the basics of gemstone grading and the hallmarks of authenticity to make informed decisions.
Technological Advancements in Traceability
Performing internal due diligence, the industry must outpace counterfeiters and foster a culture of trust and excellence via technological advancements in digital certification, blockchain-based traceability, and enhanced testing methods. By integrating these innovations, laboratories and retailers can build a system that assures both authenticity and accountability.
Promoting Traceability and Market Integrity
Advanced gemological services promote traceability and uphold the sanctity of the gemstone market. In this era of unprecedented change, we must ensure that gemstones remain symbols of beauty, authenticity, and heritage—not vulnerabilities in a market susceptible to exploitation.
