IIG’S SPARKLING INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO SURAT’S DIAMOND MANUFACTURING FACILITIES

The International Institute of Gemology (IIG) recently embarked on an exhilarating journey to Surat, the epicentre of India’s diamond industry. The power packed itinerary included a visit to renowned facilities such as Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK), Golden Carats – SRK Jewellery crafting facility, Greenlab Diamonds LLC, Finestar Diamonds, and the Surat Diamond Bourse. This industrial visit, which took place on 31st Aug. & 1st Sept. 2023, witnessed the convergence of 25 gem enthusiasts and jewellery designing students from across India and UAE, offering a profound insight into the world of diamonds and jewellery.

This industrial visit, which took place on 31st Aug. & 1st Sept. 2023, witnessed the convergence of 25 gem enthusiasts and jewellery designing students from across India and UAE, offering a profound insight into the world of diamonds and jewellery.

The power packed itinerary included a visit to renowned facilities such as Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK), Golden Carats – SRK Jewellery crafting facility, Greenlab Diamonds LLC, Finestar Diamonds, and the Surat Diamond Bourse. Each stop was meticulously curated to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the diamond production process, innovation, environmental responsibilities and ethical practices.

A Glittering Journey:

SHREE RAMKRISHNA EXPORTS (SRK):

The visit commenced at SRK, India’s leading natural diamond crafting facility, known for its ethical sourcing and sustainability practices. Participants were enthralled by the precision and artistry involved in crafting diamonds, from rough stone to polished gem.

Our visit to Shree Ramkrishna Exports was extraordinary. SRK’s annual production capacity of 720,000 carats, powered by advanced technology and precision, underscores their unwavering commitment to excellence. Witnessing the transformation of rough diamonds into dazzling gems reaffirmed SRK’s pivotal role in the global diamond trade. What sets SRK apart is their unique combination of the diamond and jewellery verticals, supported by a dedicated workforce of over 6,000 members. Furthermore, SRK’s global reach is truly astounding, as they export their exceptional products to more than 150 countries across the globe. Their commanding 15% share in the world’s demand for solitaire diamonds solidifies their eminence in the international diamond market, firmly establishing them as a pinnacle of industry leadership.

We embarked on a bus journey from SRK to Gujrat Hira Bourse – Ichhapore to visit Greenlab Diamonds, a scenic route that allowed us to soak in the sights and sounds of Surat, providing us with a firsthand look at the remarkable progress and development of the city from the vantage point of the road.

GREENLAB DIAMONDS LLC:

The next destination, Green Lab, offered a glimpse into the future with lab-grown diamonds. Visitors witnessed the marvels of science and technology, where diamonds grow atom by atom in a controlled environment. This innovative approach to diamond creation left an indelible mark on all attendees.

International Institute of Gemology (IIG) students embarked on an enlightening journey into the world of lab-grown diamonds at Greenlab Diamonds LLP. The visit offered a firsthand look at the cutting-edge science and innovation behind lab-grown diamonds, redefining the future of gemology. Highlights included witnessing the entire journey of lab-grown diamonds from seed selection to the growth of rough diamonds, and even the cutting and polishing process, all well-demonstrated. This rare glimpse into the lab’s inner workings and engaging discussions with industry experts and Mr. Smit Patel, Director of Green Lab, enhanced the students’ understanding.

The visit also shed light on Greenlab’s commitment to eco-friendly practices, including plans for a 10 MW windmill hybrid, aiming to be carbon-neutral by 2023. Notably, Greenlab’s achievement of growing a 7.50-carat lab-grown diamond, presented to the First Lady of the United States, showcased the industry’s potential. Additionally, the visit emphasized how lab-grown diamonds align with India’s “Make in India” initiative. Overall, the experience bridged theory and reality, leaving students inspired for the future of gemology.

SURAT DIAMOND BOURSE:

The pinnacle of our visit was the awe-inspiring tour of the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), an unrivalled gem in the diamond industry. Encompassing a staggering 660,000 square meters (7,100,000 sq ft) of floor space, the SDB boasts a remarkable 4,717 offices, ranging from 300 to an astonishing 200,000 square feet. With an expected daily footfall of 67,000 visitors, including brokers, traders, and skilled diamond professionals, this colossal trading hub is undeniably the epicentre of the diamond trade. Our guide, Mr. Kunjal Trivedi, meticulously unveiled every facet of the SDB, from its architectural grandeur to its cutting-edge facilities and stringent security measures. Witnessing the dynamic world of commerce where diamonds changed hands through intricate negotiations left us spellbound. Adding to the excitement is the imminent inauguration of the SDB, with the honor of Shri. Narendra Modi’s presence expected in the upcoming month of December. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Surat Diamond Association for orchestrating this exceptional visit, which has indelibly enriched our understanding of the gemological world. GOLDEN CARAT:

Golden Carat Private Limited stands as an illustrious jewellery crafting facility, renowned for its unwavering commitment to crafting exquisite pieces of the highest quality. Mr. Mahesh Bhatiya is the Director of the Golden Carat Private Limited and he vouches that within the walls of this state-of-the-art facility, the fusion of meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering passion for excellence transforms precious metals and diamonds into timeless masterpieces.

At Golden Carat, a team of skilled artisans collaborates seamlessly with advanced technology to create jewellery that encapsulates the essence of elegance and luxury. Each piece that emerges from Golden Carat’s workshop reflects the rich heritage of craftsmanship and innovation that defines SRK’s legacy in the diamond and jewellery industry.

During our visit, the Golden Carat team graciously guided us through each department, unveiling the intricate processes of designing, CAD design, wax modelling, casting, polishing, finishing, rhodium plating, packaging, and more. The factory’s design and execution exude the sophistication and precision reminiscent of a seven-star office. What’s equally commendable is their steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility, exemplified by proper chemical disposal and wastewater management, reflecting their dedication to sustainability.

From intricately designed necklaces that adorn graceful necks to dazzling rings that grace elegant fingers, and bracelets that exude timeless charm, Golden Carat’s creations stand as a testament to the artistry and precision that permeate every piece of jewellery. Beyond the aesthetic brilliance, Golden Carat upholds the highest standards of responsibility and integrity, with a resolute dedication to ethical and sustainable practices, making each of their jewellery pieces not just stunning, but also a symbol of their commitment to a brighter, more responsible future in the jewellery industry.

FINESTAR DIAMONDS:

A visit to Finestar Diamond’s Surat factory was a journey into the heart of precision and artistry. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail in every facet of diamond production left a lasting impression. Finestar Diamond Factory’s completely vertically designed and award-winning building design added to the awe-inspiring experience. Situated in Ichhapore, Surat, India, this state-of-the-art facility spans an impressive 30,500 square meters.

Finestar is renowned for its specialization in manufacturing polished diamonds, ranging from 0.30 carats to sizable gems exceeding 10 carats in all colors and clarities. Witnessing the transformation of rough stones into these exquisite gems was a testament to the expertise and dedication of the Finestar Diamond team.

Moreover, the Finestar campus is home to the IIG Surat Campus, a cutting-edge facility spread over 10,000 square feet. This campus offers state-of-the-art learning opportunities, encompassing everything from diamond manufacturing to jewellery production. It’s noteworthy that this campus was also explored by students from our Mumbai location, fostering a vibrant exchange of knowledge and experiences.
