Only Untreated Stones Qualify
The designations are granted only to untreated stones. Heated, diffused or otherwise enhanced material is not eligible, regardless of color.
Scientifically Established Color Criteria
Each trade name is defined by documented, scientifically established criteria specified ranges of hue, tone and saturation, assessed under standardized lighting and supported by spectroscopic and colorimetric analysis.
Consistent Determinations Across GSI Laboratories
The definitions are identical at every issuing laboratory, maintained through shared master reference sets, calibrated instrumentation and proficiency testing of qualified gemologists. A stone assessed in Jaipur receives the same determination as it would in any other GSI laboratory.
A New Domestic Capability for the Indian Trade
For the Indian trade, the launch brings a capability domestically that has until now required consigning fine material abroad, with the attendant cost, transit risk, and delay.
Meenu Brijesh Vyas on Jaipur’s Gemological Significance
“Jaipur has cut and traded the world’s finest rubies and sapphires for generations, yet a stone finished here has always had to travel abroad to carry a name like Pigeon Blood. That ends today. It is a matter of real pride that the first laboratory in India to define these names is doing so from the city that has shaped these stones for centuries the expertise was always here, and now the authority is too.” Meenu Brijesh Vyas, Global Head Gemologist
Service Available Across Four Global Locations
The service is available now in Jaipur, Mumbai, New York, and Bangkok.
