BIS Introduces Voluntary Hallmarking for Silver Jewellery from September 1
In a landmark decision announced recently, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will introduce voluntary hallmarking for silver jewellery and artefacts starting September 1, 2025. This move extends the hallmarking regime, previously limited to gold, to include silver, bringing greater transparency and consumer protection to the silver market.
Six Purity Grades and New Hallmarking Format for Silver Jewellery
According to the report, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued guidelines for six grades of silver jewellery—900, 800, 835, 925, 970, and 990 purity levels. The updated regulation introduces a standardised format: silver items will now carry the BIS logo, a purity grade (such as 925 for sterling silver), an assaying centre’s mark, and a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. The older system of four purity marks will be phased out by August 31, 2025, allowing manufacturers and retailers a brief transition period.
