India’s Gems and Jewellery Industry Enters a Period of Transformation
The Indian gems and jewellery industry is navigating a period of significant transformation across its diamond and gold segments, shaped by elevated precious-metal prices, evolving consumer preferences, changing global trade dynamics and increasing emphasis on trust, transparency, technology and value. India’s gems and jewellery exports stood at US$27.72 billion in FY2025–26, including US$11.36 billion in gold jewellery and US$12.16 billion in cut and polished diamonds, even as the industry seeks to diversify markets and strengthen its global competitiveness. At the same time, India’s gold market is witnessing a shift in consumption and investment patterns: gold demand stood at 131 tonnes in Q2 2026, with spending reaching a record ₹1,979 billion, while H1 bar-and-coin demand rose to 113 tonnes, the strongest first half since 2013, and gold ETF demand reached a record 24 tonnes, up 163% year-on-year. These trends, alongside changing diamond consumer preferences and growing adoption of technology, underscore the need for a more innovative, transparent, resilient and globally competitive Indian gems and jewellery ecosystem.
