Turning Family Legacy into a Living Business Philosophy
Your story places strong weight on family legacy. How do you turn inherited legacy into a living business philosophy rather than a retrospective narrative?
Ask most jewellery houses about legacy, and you’ll get a story about the past: a founder, a first workshop, a photograph in black and white. Ask us, and you’ll get a workshop full of people still doing it. I still remember my grandfather sitting with me, teaching me that gold is never just gold; it’s someone’s trust, and you don’t get to break that trust for the sake of speed or profit. He taught us the value of patience, the ethics of honest weighing, and the discipline of never letting a piece leave until it’s actually right. That’s what he handed down to us, not a business, but a way of living with the work. Legacy, for us, was never something to frame and hang on a wall. What we make with it keeps changing, but the way we were taught to work never has.
Defining Authentic Craftsmanship
In a category where many brands claim craftsmanship, what does authenticity actually mean to Bansi?
A lot of jewellery brands say the word “craftsmanship.” For us, authenticity isn’t just about the hands that make a piece; it’s just as much about the design behind it. It’s easy to call something handcrafted; it’s harder to make sure the design itself is honest and original, not just borrowed from what’s already out there. And craftsmanship today isn’t only about traditional handwork anymore. It’s also about the right technology at the right stage, used to support the process, not replace it. Real craftsmanship means maintaining that standard at every single step, from the first sketch to the final finish, not just at the parts people can see.
What Truly Differentiates Great Jewellery?
If craftsmanship is the foundation, what becomes the real differentiator: design originality, finishing, comfort, or emotional resonance?
For a long time, good finishing was enough to stand out. Today, that’s not true anymore. Buyers have seen a lot of antique gold jewellery, and they can easily tell when a design is just a small variation of something they’ve already seen. So while finishing still matters, design has become just as important. We’re not trying to make the same thing look nicer; we’re trying to give our karigars something genuinely new to make.
The Evolution of Bridal Jewellery
The brand is strongly associated with bridal and heritage-led aesthetics. How is the idea of bridal jewellery changing, and how is Bansi responding to that change?
Bridal jewellery is changing too. Earlier, a bridal piece meant one heavy set that was worn once and then locked away for years. That’s not how today’s bride thinks. She still wants heritage, and she still wants that heavy, rich gold feeling, but she also wants pieces she can wear again, not just on her wedding day, but at a sangeet, a festival, or even a regular day when she feels like dressing up. That’s really why we built NEO. It has the same antique hand finishing we’re known for, but it’s lighter, easier to wear, and comes with colourful stonework, so she gets more than one moment out of it.
Can Lightweight Jewellery Still Feel Luxurious?
Can a piece still feel luxurious if it is intentionally designed to be lighter, easier, and more practical?
That actually answers something people often ask us: can a lighter piece still feel luxurious? For us, this was never really about luxury alone. Bridal jewellery was never just gold; it carries a lot of emotion and meaning attached to it, and that’s something we’ve always kept in mind. So even as we make pieces lighter, they can’t be so light that you wear them once and put them away. Earlier, managing weight this way was genuinely difficult because of technological limitations, but that’s changed now, and the latest technology lets us manage weight without compromising on strength. Strength and durability still matter to us more than anything else, because a piece like this isn’t just jewellery for one occasion; it’s an heirloom, something meant to be passed down from one generation to the next.
Measuring Success Beyond Numbers
What does success look like for Bansi Jewellers today?
When people ask what success looks like for us today, I think about the trust that’s been built over time. Today, over 200 retailers put their trust in Bansi, and that trust is what we measure ourselves by, more than any single number. That trust is also why we’re now moving into a space nearly ten times bigger than where we started, with a lot more milestones still ahead of us. To us, success was never a destination; it’s something that keeps growing, one trusted relationship and one new milestone at a time.
The Bansi Aesthetic Defined
If you had to define the Bansi aesthetic in one idea, would it be?
If you ask me to sum up Bansi in one idea, it would be this: craft that keeps earning the right to be worn again. And if there’s one collection right now that captures exactly what that means, it’s NEO. NEO isn’t a spin-off or a side experiment for us; it’s where we’re putting a lot of our energy and belief right now. It carries everything Bansi has always stood for: the same antique hand finishing, the same jadtar work, the same discipline our karigars have practised for years. But it’s shaped completely differently. NEO pieces are mid-length, made to sit comfortably rather than dominate an outfit, finished with multi-coloured stonework instead of the usual single-tone antique gold look.
They’re lighter, more wearable, and honestly, more fun, meant for a bride or a woman who wants something she can reach for at a sangeet, a festive evening, or just a day she wants to feel a little dressed up. That doesn’t mean we’ve compromised anywhere. The strength, the durability, the finishing, all of it is held to the same standard as our heaviest bridal pieces, because even a lighter piece from Bansi is still meant to last and still meant to be passed down if someone chooses to.
What excites us about NEO is that it’s proof our craft doesn’t need heavy gold to feel rich or meaningful; it just needed a new shape to work with. That, to us, is the real definition of the Bansi aesthetic: not staying the same, but staying true, while still finding new ways to show up for the people who wear our jewellery.
