100 YEARS OF CIBJO: RESPONSIBILITY AND TRANSPARENCY FOR THE JEWELLERY INDUSTRY’S FUTURE
The second day of Vicenzaoro September 2026 at IEG’S Vicenza venue, and the second day of proceedings for CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation chaired by Gaetano Cavalieri, which is celebrating its centenary at the Expo Centre. The Congress opened yesterday with the elite of the international jewellery industry gathering to discuss the transformations that are reshaping the global jewellery sector: from rising precious material costs to geopolitical tensions and tariffs, right through to technological acceleration and artificial intelligence. Around 600 participants were in attendance, representing the entire supply chain, from miners to retailers, gemmological laboratories and major brands. The opening session featured speeches by Maurizio Ermeti, president of IEG; Cyrille Vigneron, chairman of culture and philanthropy at Cartier; and Gareth Penny, former CEO of De Beers and now chairman of the Ninety-One fund. Today’s programme of events, entitled Trust for the next century: responsibility, collaboration and impact, looks to the future by focusing on responsibility, collaboration and impact, with particular emphasis on pragmatic sustainability and transparency towards the consumer. Key issues include the urgent need for a rigorous classification system to clearly distinguish between natural and synthetic diamonds, particularly in light of marketing strategies that have altered their perception in the market. The discussion extends to the entire world of gemstones, from diamonds to coloured stones, such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds, with consumer protection identified as a central element for the sector’s future credibility.
VO VINTAGE, WHERE EXCELLENCE MEETS CULTURE: WATCH OF THE YEAR AWARD
Following a morning that kicked off with a live broadcast of the Laboratorio podcast, hosted by Dody Giussani and Pietro Pannone, interviewing Massimo Carraro, President and CEO of the Morellato Group, IEG’s exhibition and marketplace specifically for fine vintage watches and jewellery, open to the public until 7th September, continued in the afternoon with DEEP-X: All About the Limited Edition, dedicated to the collaborative project that has engaged the very best of high-end Italian watchmaking to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Watch Insanity. The event will feature a one-of-a-kind timepiece and an ultra-customised Made in Italy movement. The day will conclude with the presentation ceremony of the 2026 Watch of the Year award, an accolade assigned by the readers of L’Orologio magazine. Tomorrow, Sunday 6th September, the programme will continue with three events. The first will be “The Italian micro-brand out to conquer the world”, dedicated to the international growth of Venezianico and the phenomenon of contemporary watchmaking micro-brands. This will be followed by “The Art of the Chronograph: Iconic companies, mechanics and a glossary for collectors”, an in-depth exploration of the technology, history and language of the chronograph, presented by Irene Baiardi. The programme will end with “Jewellery with a story: why Art Deco still has appeal and value”, dedicated to the charm and enduring relevance of Art Deco jewellery in the collecting world.
