A Case of Deception: ‘Natural Kashmir Sapphire’
A client approached us with a stunning 12-carat gemstone, purchased overseas as a “Natural Kashmir Sapphire” and accompanied by what appeared to be a credible lab report. The offer was tantalising, with the price set significantly below market value. Gemological analysis at our lab and efforts from our R&D department soon revealed the unsettling truth: the stone was a synthetic sapphire, expertly engineered to mimic the visual and physical characteristics of its natural counterpart. Refractive index (RI) and specific gravity (SG) tests confirmed the synthetic origin, while microscopic examination revealed tell-tale signs of a flame-fusion process, such as gas bubbles and curved striae. The counterfeit lab report added a layer of complexity, meticulously mirroring genuine documentation to deceive the buyer.

This case underscores a larger pattern.
